When Jayne (Juliet Stevenson), a professional cleaner, calls at Mrs Rogers' house after a holiday, she finds a gruesome sight. Mrs Rogers (Eve Pearce) is dead, apparently horrifically murdered: Jayne calls the police. As they take stock of the scene, we go back in time to look more closely at the relationship between two women, looking also at what happened on the night of Mrs Rogers' death. In so doing, we discover that it was Mrs Rogers' many cats, finally declaring their hand in the unspoken battle between the two women for their affections, who played the crucial role in their owner's death. Jayne, perhaps blinding herself to the extent of the cats' self-serving ruthlessness, assures the unsuspecting police that she will look after the pets. She has assumed Mrs Rogers' mantle: will she ultimately suffer the same fate...?
